Uncertain tapestry of human life

Title: The Uncertain Tapestry of Life: Lessons from a Tragedy

What is the meaning of life? This eternal question echoes louder whenever we are faced with tragedy — unexpected, uninvited, and beyond human control. We plan, we dream, we struggle, and yet, in a single moment, everything can change. The recent London-bound aircraft disaster stands as a chilling reminder of how fragile and uncertain human life truly is.

Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft burst into flames and crashed onto the roof of a medical college hostel building. In a matter of seconds, over 260 lives were lost — including many young medical students who were having food inside their hostel. The pain and vacuum left in the hearts of their families is beyond description. These were sons and daughters who had secured admission to medical college after years of hard work, relentless study, prayers, and sacrifice. Their dreams, and those of their families, were turned to ashes in a single moment.

Only one person survived this horrific accident — seated near the emergency exit, a position that fate alone seemed to decide. Why him? Why not the others? These are questions no science or reason can answer. Life, it seems, is not always a question of logic, but of destiny.

Among the victims was a nurse working in London who had returned to India for her housewarming ceremony. After years of toil abroad, she had constructed her dream house with hope and excitement. But fate dealt a cruel hand. She perished in the disaster, never getting to see the walls she had built with love and longing. Her two children, entrusted to their grandmother, are left without their mother — a silent tragedy that speaks volumes about the price many migrant workers silently pay.

Yet, amidst the ashes of despair, stories of miraculous escapes also emerged. One family, delayed by an unexpected traffic jam, missed the ill-fated flight. The video of the mother performing a pooja before their home deity in gratitude for their narrow escape moved thousands across the nation. It reminded us that in life, what seems like a delay or an inconvenience may, in hindsight, be a divine intervention.

These incidents reflect a powerful truth: life is not in our control. We make plans for tomorrow, for next month, for next year — forgetting that even the next hour is not promised. The unpredictability of life does not mean we should stop planning or dreaming. Rather, it teaches us to live with humility, to cherish every moment, and to never take anything — or anyone — for granted.

This tragedy also teaches us the value of prayer, kindness, and gratitude. We may not have control over destiny, but we can choose to live meaningfully. We can choose to be present in our relationships, to forgive faster, to express love more often, and to appreciate the gift of simply being alive.

Let us bow our heads in silent tribute to those who lost their lives, and in doing so, let us embrace the lesson they unknowingly left behind: Life is not measured in years, but in moments — and each moment is precious.
